According to an interview in 1919, Walter Hiers said his first appearance was as a bell-hop in SAVED FROM HIMSELF (Biograph 1911 directed by you-know-who) with Mabel Normand. It is not listed in his filmography, nor in the credits of "DW Griffith and the Biograph Company". I just watched it again and I think it's him (he would be 18). He enters at 3:04, on and off, leaves at 4:18

Yep, that's Walter allright, a little thinner, but the head and the facial reactions are him.

I have a much better print of this film where he's even easier to spot.

Did Hiers say anything in that interview about working for the Excelsior Film Company in Chicago? I still think he's the bartender in this film as well:
