YOU'RE NEXT (1940) Catlett and Collins

Postby Richard M Roberts » Thu Dec 12, 2013 9:35 pm

Here's a little Columbia spooky action with the 1940 YOU'RE NEXT, teaming Walter Catlett and Monty Collins, Dudley Dickerson, and Chester Conklin in a bit at the beginning:

Just the type of material that turns me off of Columbia's. Joe Adamson wrote of "....those comedies where a gorilla wanders in and out of a room and no one ever notices it..."
This does looks familiar. Was this ever shown at Slapsticon? Or maybe Cinecon...?

Catlett's character name of Slocum was the same monicker he used in BRINGING UP BABY. For me a far better use of his comedic talents.

Funny, that's just the type of material that's why I love Columbia comedies, though it is better when the gorilla is Charles Gemora.

Never shown at Slapsticon or Cinecon as far as I recall (nor it's direct remake, PARDON MY TERROR (1946) with Schilling and Lane), though we did run GUM SHOES (1935), the Tom Kennedy/Monty Collins/Charles Gemora Columbia Classic at Slapsticon a few years back.

Johnson, you Comedy Snob! As someone very near and dear to me once said, " You can never go wrong with a Gorilla".

I'm with Richard on this one. I find even marginal Columbia shorts entertaining in one fashion or another. A "You're Next" lobby card has been in my collection for years and at the bottom is a clear statement this is "a Columbia short subject presenation." Nowhere on the card is the word "comedy" featured. I'm sure Columbia's legal department had input into any promises given or implied.

That final gag with Dudley Dickerson is a real throwback to the silent era. That kind of stuff is not often seen in the 1940s.

And Jules White was right. Collins wasn't as funny without his birthright nose.

A direct steal from SUPER-HOOPER-DYNE-LIZZIES (1925), still breakin' `em up back then at those Klan-Meetin' Matinees in the South.

Funny comedy. Never saw this before. These Columbia shorts are a lot of fun. Glad there's more to see scattered on utube. Slapstick, sight gag, physical comedy with a gorilla, what's not to enjoy?

Among several stills I have from this short is one (#471-6) of a deleted opening scene showing Eddie Fetherston as the guy who robbed and tied up Catlett & Collins. He appears nowhere else in the film, but there's a cast credit for all those logging such things (like me!)
