Lost Pat and Patachons

For those who care about Danish Slapstick also (even if shot in Austria or Germany!) -- there are now some illustrations up on the Lost Films website, https://www.lost-films.eu/index for the lost P&Ps

Pat und Patachon als Schwiegersöhne - https://www.lost-films.eu/films/show/id/3824
and
1000 Worte deutsch - https://www.lost-films.eu/documents/show/id/3208

The films are of particular interest as Schwiegersöhne was directed by later Nazi propagandist Hans Steinhoff, while 1000 Worte tries to address the new language challenges of the talkies by portraing Pat and Patachon's effort to learn German on occasion of an international tramp congress.

I genuinely enjoy Pat and Patachon. In my opinion they are one of the best film comedy teams ever! Although some of their material is quite "European" the bulk of their work has universal appeal - much like Laurel and Hardy. I'd love to see more postings about them on this site. Thanks

Jim,

have a look at this charming website from a Danish collector: http://www.warming.dk/index%20ENGELSK.htm

There used to be a great website from the University of Oldenburg, but it appears to be down now, with only partial backups on the Internet Archive.

On good old paper and in English, I'd recommend M. Engberg's essay, 'Palladium and the Silent Films with 'Long and Short'," in: John Fullerton and Jan Olsson (ed.), Nordic Explorations: Film before 1930, London 1999, 56-62.

Last but certainly not least, the Danish National Filmography has lots of information on the "Fy og Bi" films and co-workers; these URLs should take you directly to those filmographic entries with poster images and stills:

Uli - Just spotted your post. I came across the Pat and Patachon website last year but this prompted me to revisit it. I was pleased to see new material has been added. Question. Do you know if Carl Schenstrom died in 1942 as a result of the war? Also, the information about Harald Madsen's phobia about the death ray is fascinating yet very sad. I really feel Pat and Patachon warrant more interest here in the U.S.

Jim -- the books I have don't seem to indicate a cause of death, but the Danish wikipedia entry on Schenstrøm refers to a brief illness preceding his death. I agree on the apparent lack of interest -- but that's also somewhat true for Europe, even their native Denmark.
