MIDNIGHT MELODIES with Jack Gilford (1936)

In this Paramount one-reeler, Jack Gilford does several impressions including Harry Langdon. A bold artistic choice to make in 1936. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFmXu6JM96A

I saw Jack Gilford perform live in Larry Gelbart's THE SLY FOX in Los Angeles with George C. Scott, Hector Elizondo, Trish Van Devere, and Bob Dischy. Gilford was delightful, and looking at him here, he really did not change much as he aged.

That said, I can't say it was much of a Langdon impression, it's more a Langdon mannerism or a caricature, the nose wiping thing is a Langdon trait, but Gilford needed a few more traits to go along with it.

Why did I like Jack Gilford doing George Jessel better than the original?

Well, I once said the best thing about George Jessel was the impersonation Charlie Callas did.

When somebody else did Jessel, they could make him funny.
