I have this same version on a VHS tape and was always wondering about the soundtrack. Was this a 1930's sound reissue? Very funny, love all the great gags like Mack stopping at the bar quickly downing shots of whiskey, riding the horses inside the saloon and all the knockabout.

Do you know who directed and wrote this?

It was directed by Fred Fishback and Supervised by Henry Lehrman. There's several of those soundtracks in the Charlie Tarbox releases (apart from all the ones carrying his legendary music track) and I think those might have been done when he was trying to sell a television series of silent films narrated by Cliff Arquette of Charlie Weaver fame. They ended up on those prints sans Arquettes narration later on.

Is that the music tracks heard on many Grapevine video silent comedy releases?
