Lloyd Hamilton in "A Home Made Man" on eBay

Postby Ed Watz » Fri Jan 13, 2012 8:04 am

For those interested, I spotted this title just listed on the UK eBay site, it's one of Ham's last silent comedies: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478641/

Well, it's a reversal print, and thats not an 800 or 600 ft reel pictured, it's a 400 foot reel. Smells fishy to me.

The reel is 9.5 inches in diameter, which corresponds to a British 800 foot reel. Most of the two reel comedies I get from the UK are on this smaller-sized reel. The center or hub is about half the size of US 800 foot reels. At 600 feet the print may be incomplete but that's not an uncommon situation when encountering Ham's films today (HOOKED, MOONSHINE, THE SIMP, et al). The poor guy's legacy tends to exist in fragments.

I wouldn't necessarily consider reversals of silent prints to be a detriment. I've had reversals made of fragile prints and the image's contrast actually looks better on the reversal.

Reversals of sound prints I've found to be another matter - the soundtrack diminishes a bit - but that's a topic for another forum.

I'm not a collector but if a film is found in 9.5 mm format is it most likely that it was produced in Europe?

The diameter (length across it) of the reel itself is 9 and a half inches, Gary. The diameter of US 800 foot reels is ten and a half inches. The film gauge is 16mm, not 9.5mm. The width of the film is 16mm. Hope this helps!

Yeah but when it comes to Economics I'm still in kindergarten ("let's see - for $66 I can own all the Roach L&H talkies on DVD...or maybe I can buy a 16mm print of just ONE L&H short on eBay...and maybe it won't be splicy or scratchy...or have VS...or be a dupe...or...or..." This is a TOUGH CALL for me!).
