DEEP SEA PANIC chunk really MASKED MARVEL

Postby Steve Massa » Fri Feb 25, 2011 11:31 am

Hi guys
This goes back to Dave Glass's thread about the Bristol Slapstick fest and the unidentified chunk starring Paul Parrott. Since the cast and the costumes on Paul Parrott and Mildred June in Dave's scans exactly matched MoMA's footage of A DEEP SEA PANIC it was assumed it was part of that film's missing footage. But digging around to double check I've come across a review for another Parrott Fox comedy, THE MASKED MARVEL, whose synopsis matches the scans, particularly the reference to Kalla Pasha as "the head of the army in a mythical kingdom" and Parrott posing as an "oriental dancer." Anyway, here's the review from the 12/6/1924 Moving Picture World (pg. 543):

"THE MASKED MARVEL (Fox - Comedy - Two Reels)
Paul Parrott and Kalla Pasha have the principal roles in this two-reel Fox comedy. The action follows familiar slapstick lines and presents Kalla as a masked wrestler who is in reality the head of the army in a mythical kingdom. He steals the gate receipts and returns to his home. Paul follows and by masquerading as an Oriental dancer gets the money back. There are a number of gags which have been used before such as the girl in the auto putting on walking shoes and starting home when the owner starts to get fresh, the slashing of the seat of the villain's trousers and comedy business with a flivver. This should prove average entertainment for slapstick fans. - C. S. S."

Both films were directed by Roy Del Ruth, with A DEEP SEA PANIC released on 9/28/1924 and THE MASKED MARVEL on 11/16/1924. They must have been shot back to back as well, hence all the overlaps. So now we know that chunks of both films exist.

Hello, All---Further proof that A DEEP SEA PANIC and THE MASKED MARVEL were made at the same time: one of the lobby cards accidentally included in the set for DEEP SEA is a scene frm MASKED MARVEL.---Cole Johnson.
