The Differences Between Mathew "Tijuana" Jones and Spencer Williams

Postby Richard M Roberts » Fri May 10, 2019 6:10 pm

We are putting this up for the assistance of some misguided film historians who are having difficulty telling the difference between Mathew “Tijuana” Jones and Spencer Williams:

This is Mathew “Tijuana” Jones in one of his few actually credited film appearances in Mack Sennett’s THE NEW AUNT (1928):

Here’s Mathew “Tijuana” Jones in one of his other few actual credited appearances in Mack Sennett’s RUN GIRL RUN (1928):

Here’s Spencer Williams doing drag as the cook in Hal Roach’s PASS THE GRAVY (1928):

Here’s Spencer Williams in the 1931 short HOT BISKITS, which he produced, directed and co-starred in:

For those still having troubles, Mathew Jones is wall-eyed and has a seriously broken nose, Spencer Williams does not.

I'd say, based on the top and bottom pics, there's considerable difference, so a mix up is a bit hard to understand. Also, I tend to think Williams was a bit more prolific, having directed some "race" films, as well as playing Andy Brown on tv.
