Mack Sennett comedies in Variétés, 1929?

Postby Hilde D'haeyere » Mon Mar 06, 2017 6:20 pm

dear friends,
another occasion in which I am asking for your help. In a 1929 issue of the Belgian avant-garde art magazine Variétés, I came across an illustrated page with stills from comedies. Specifically those on the left interest me, they picture scenes with Ben Turpin and Billy Bevan. Of the top image, I am pretty sure it is a still from A Small Town Idol - although the particular scene with Dot Farley and Derelys Perdue is not part of the finished movie. Or is it?
But I am lost with the image on the bottom left: can anybody please help me to identify the film in which Billy Bevan finds himself covered by a bed sheet, on top of a table, amidst a group of surprised African-American people?
Any ideas on the comedies pictured on the right page are very welcome too (possibly Fox's Battling Kangaroo, 1926, top right?).
A million thanks, and greetings from Belgium!
Hilde

Hi Hilda,

The Turpin still is from ROMEO AND JULIET (1924), that's Natalie Kingston with Ben and Dot Farley.

The Billy Bevan still is from SKINNERS IN SILK (1925).

The still on the upper right is Lige Conley, George Gray, and Harry Thaw from BATTLING KANGAROOS (1926) The one on the lower left is Larainne Eddy, Jimmie Adams, and Billy Engle from some Christie Paramount short Circa 1927-1928.

I'm pretty sure it's GOOFY GHOSTS (1928), but I can't find my copy of that film at the moment.

I think the Jimmie Adams film is DR. QUACK (1927). That's the only Adams Christie Paramount film I have nothing on and the costuming matches no images of Adams Christie Paramounts wearing that get-up on the stuff I have access to. Adams does not wear a topper in GOOFY GHOSTS.

That's another candidate,(though I don't have any evidence that Loraine Eddy is in that one) but that works for me.
