No one else gave Chaplin such a wonderful birthday persent (isn't 125 a milestone birthday?).
I am so happy to see this finally released...after all your hard work!

As to the decision to go Blu-ray, bravo!
I have noticed that some films that have required a great deal of restoration have come out in Blu-Ray only.
It just doesn't properly represent all that went into a detailed restoration to not release it on the best definition possible.
I even had to get my 85 year old father a Blu-Ray player after I tried in vain to buy him some new releases of old films only to find the new box set restorations were Blu-Ray only. Getting him the player, paying for it, and setting it up were not a problem for me. Writing down all the directions for him and going over it many times was dooable.
Having to go over the directions of working it at least 10 times ever time I see him ... a bit more of a challenge.

But it is worth it.
Many films in SD are fine on DVD, but when so much effort has gone into HD restorations of 100 year old films, best quality format is the way to go.

Thanks so much, Paul.
I am looking forward to ordering these.

Ahmmm, Agnes, I saw your comment over at Nitratevile on this subject......you do realize that Paul did not do the Chaplin Mutual set? That's another David Shepard/Lobster Films set, and Charlie will most likely be still moving at the standard Shepard comedy-killing slo-mo?

Now I am told tough Flicker Alley is catering to the blu ray snobs and shutting other consumers out

We understand your frustration, Pasquale. But I would not at all characterize
it as catering to snobs, rather it was a business decision based on reports of
drastically declining DVD sales and a desire to present the films in the best
manner possible. All of the companies involved have to recoup their (massive)
production costs or close their doors. There is nothing more to it.

That said, the people at Flicker Alley are wonderful and I encourage you to
let them know that you would like to see the collection in DVD form too.
If there is enough interest, they will almost certainly act on it.

Thanks for understanding. Is it good business to turn customers away just to please a select group?
This means less sold.

I did. They appear to have a standard cut and paste response though.

Just to add my tuppence worth...

Most USA Blu-Ray releases don't play on UK Blu-ray machines.
The region codes are easily hacked on DVD releases but not on BD.
This could prohibit a lot of European sales for Flicker Alley.

Which, for an item like this would be sizeable. It's Flicker Alleys decision and I basically have stayed out of the arguement either way (though I was a bit annoyed that I was going to have to buy a BD player as well to see a set I've worked on), but this arguement just tipped the scales for me, it's a dumb idea. Though do we know that they won;t be doing it region free?

Maybe they'll give you a free BD player for all the work you did as a token of appreciation.

Concern is unwarranted, Dave and Richard, the set is REGION FREE and can be ordered
directly from the Flicker Alley site by anyone, anywhere.

If someone would like to donate the additional $16,000.00 of studio costs required to
produce a DVD version of the set -- we will be happy to donate our time to prepare it.

Failing that, for those without BR, all of the films will also be available for streaming
from the FA site.

We will also need to buy BR players in order to watch our own work!

That's funny.

No one gets rich restoring silent comedies.

Or collecting them!

Then here's a question....What's a good BD player at a reasonable price?
