Watching How to Make Movies recently I noticed in the background some sort of contraption with what look like two large white sheets on it. Does anyone know what its function is? My guess it something to assist with lighting. <I've asked this question in other forums but no one seems to know>
And I also noticed that the viewing device for rushes that David Totheroh shows Kevin Brownlow in the recent TCM documentary Image Makers, well you can also see it, or a version of it, in How to Make Movies.
What is that thing in How to Make Movies?

Having had occasion to work with photographers, I believe you are correct. Those white screens reflect studio or natural light. They help with reducing shadows.

Yep, those are just early-era reflectors. White card gives more diffuse softer light than steel or aluminum for more powerful reflection.
