Re: Stan Laurel Fondly Remembers "When Knights..."

I also found Stan's gag involving the obviously fake cyclorama castle wall on which grew the ever-expanding trellis both funny and interesting. It shows his creative amusement involving early special effects, pre-dating his tongue-in-cheek treatment of rear screen projection in the final moments of ...

Re: SLAPSTICON 2010 to unveil lost and unknown Chaplin Film

Thanks for a great Slapsticon experience to all Silent Comedy Mafiosa involved! The highlight for me was finally being able to see what Stan Laurel considered to be one of his funniest gags in the second reel of "When Knights Were Cold" - the use of circus clown basket horses in a chase sc...

Re: Seeking Information on Film

The original title of this film is "Fred's Fictitious Foundling." It's a Sunbeam Comedy that was released in June 1918 and stars Hilliard Karr. The director was Josh Binning. For a number of years a still of it has been featured on the Slapsticon website ... http://www.slapsticon.org Jim K

Re: Slapsticon 2010

Ditto! Richard does a great job programming the four-day event. And all of the Slapsticon "worker bees" are so dedicated at making it such a thoroughly enjoyable experience that I can't wait for July to roll around!

Re: Scott Eyman revews Brent Walkers Sennett Book

Brent / Richard - All I have to say is that in regards to the aforementioned review, both of you are "on the money" ... er, ah, ... well ... oh, forget it. What the heck! I agree with the two of you. Box office dollars can be interesting when put into the context of a comedian's best and w...

Re: New Independent Feature on Mabel Normand

If this tragi-comic film (actually video) inadvertantly finds its way into production, I think we're looking at something akin to "Plan Nine From Outer Space" in audience appeal. All I can think is that the actress portraying Mabel must be a direct descendent of Al Joy. There can be no oth...

Re: Flying Elephants Shooting Location

Joe - My wife would have been okay with going up to Moapa if she were out here with me, as long as I agreed to take her to several of the Cirque du Soleil shows on the Strip. She now even knows which one is Laurel and which one is Hardy. Good things take time.

Re: Flying Elephants Shooting Location

After leaving a couple of voicemails for Beezy and not hearing back from the guy, I made it out to Las Vegas on Sunday and started work yesterday. The crew and I finished up a little early today so I quickly hopped in my rental car and headed up to Moapa while the sun was still in the sky. Well, you...

Re: Flying Elephants Shooting Location

Thanks for the suggestions. Actually, Randy, it was in your book that I learned about this very obscure shooting location. It makes you think how in tarnation these Hollywood folk ended up in the middle of the Nevada desert when similar locations were available around the LA area! Figuring the town ...

Flying Elephants Shooting Location

On Sunday I'm heading to Las Vegas for a week-long shoot and am wondering if anyone knows much about Maopa, Nevada, which is where Laurel and Hardy shot "Flying Elephants" back in 1927. It's about 60-70 miles outside the city in the middle of absolutely nowhere. I'd make time to go up ther...
