Laurel & Hardy in "Morton's Plumbing Shop"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_9ZVwUTheo This really is one of the holiest of Laurel & Hardy holy grails. Unheard – and unknown – for almost 75 years until it was unearthed last year by John Tefteller, this clip is from a rarest of rare rehearsal performance of “Morton’s Plumbing Shop”, a pil...

Re: ATOLL K coming to blu-ray from the BFI
It's telling that the ATOLL K blu-ray is outselling the five-feature "Best Of" blu-ray set on amazon.co.uk ATOLL K is #88 in DVD & Blu-ray > Comedy BEST OF is #427 in DVD & Blu-ray > Comedy Cracking the Top 100 is not bad at all for "Laurel & Hardy's worst film ever"!

Re: Saw STAN AND OLLIE last night.....
I’d say a lot of this was indeed driven by Mr. Laurel; no doubt Babe was just seeking a paycheque while Stan was seeking creative freedom and a salary he considered worthy of the team. It seemed to get contentious around the time of “The Fighting Kentuckian”; according to AJ Marriot’s book “Laurel &...

Re: Saw STAN AND OLLIE last night.....
Well that’s my point exactly. Besides the aforementioned “My Darling is a Kangaroo” and a 1948 blurb about Roach wanting to sign them for a series of 12-minute TV shorts, I can’t think of a single Hollywood offer they got between 1945-51. Hardy might’ve been in demand; Laurel & Hardy weren’t. No...

Re: Saw STAN AND OLLIE last night.....
Absolutely true to all that, but let's say they were in optimal health in 1948-49 -- I'm not sure the offers would have been pouring in, especially not from the big studios after the bridge-burning interviews they did about Fox and MGM once they left. (The only thing I recall coming up during that p...

Re: Saw STAN AND OLLIE last night.....
I can't disagree with any of this fine insight, and definitely think there's emotional territory to be mined (or that should have been mined by the filmmakers) about the years 1940 right up to 1953 -- where Stan's grandiose plans of leaving Roach lead to a harsh reality, leading to what must have be...

Re: ATOLL K coming to blu-ray from the BFI
Thanks David. The transfer looks stellar -- it's a film I like a lot, and is definitely the best of their post-Roach features. This is one well worth having!

Re: Nitrateville Correction Dept: Our Gang MGM Silents
There's 14 1927-29 MGM silent releases -- looking gorgeous -- on this German DVD. They're a strange lot, but readily available nowadays, yep. https://www.amazon.de/Die-kleinen-Strolche-1927-1929-Stummfilme/dp/B002880H7S/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1532086746&sr=8-3&keywords=die+kleinen+strolc...

Re: Examiner Review of SMILEAGE GUARANTEED by Richard Roberts
I know this is an old post, but it's recently become a little more relevant. Listen to any 5 minutes of any of Richard M. Roberts' commentary tracks on any DVD, then the entire 142 minutes of James L. Neibaur's comments on RUNNING WILD and THE OLD ARMY GAME, and that'll tell you all you need to know...
