That's easy. He wasn't let go... he asked for his release. As for why, you'll have to read LITTLE ELF... or Richard's Roach book, since I'm sure we're in agreement on that point.

Re: Langdon book review by Brad Linaweaver

I hate to say it, but I’m afraid LITTLE ELF (the term itself coming from a Capra quote, and one that I feel is no more successful in describing Langdon’s actual comic character than terms like “The Baby” or “The Baby Dope-fiend”) still leans a bit too much towards the Capra point of view, and that ...

Re: So long, MCW!

I saw a lovely, nearly block-long news and magazine stand in Los Angeles just a day or two ago, right across the street from Canters Deli and near the Silent Movie Theater on Fairfax. Good to hear that one's still around! Anyone know if the one at Cahuenga & Hollywood (to the immediate north of...

Re: Langdon book review by Brad Linaweaver

Well Michael, I happen to live in an ideal world so I'll stick to my thesis. And what damage are we now talking about? Harry is in the midst of a renaissance. Thanks to the outstanding work of Mr. Gierucki Langdon's silents are now widely available for home viewing. With all due respect to Mr. Gier...

Re: Langdon book review by Brad Linaweaver

If we truly want to make sure that the record is set right, start writing about Capra's pecking order in the Langdon hierarchy -- as a young, talented, junior gag writer -- and stop immediately elevating him to the status he would later achieve in the Thirties. It acts as a disservice to all that L...

LITTLE ELF: A Celebration of Harry Langdon

LITTLE ELF can now be pre-ordered from Amazon. (The books are printed; they just need to make their way to Amazon's warehouse[s] before they ship out.) This is the best (possibly the only) way to get it if you live outside the U.S. And for those IN the U.S., there's free shipping. http://www.amazon....

BearManor Media has seen fit to make our Harry Langdon book, LITTLE ELF, available now: http://www.bearmanormedia.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=509 The webpage is not terribly detailed, so here's what fifty bucks buys: A 692-page extravaganza that is half biography, half filmogr...

Re: The Many Faces of Joy

Looks like the makings of a terrific book cover, Bob! In fact, there's no more appropriate subject for the first-ever volume credited to THE SILENT COMEDY MAFIA! Everybody pools their knowledge and research for the definitive tome of all things Joy. How many pages will it take to do justice to the a...

Re: Question regarding THE STAGE HAND

Educational didn't own the Principal Pictures lot either. Remember, those Gillstrom Langdons were basically independent productions that Educational distributed, which is why Gillstrom switched to Paramount for better distribution so easily when he had the opportunity. Western Service became anothe...
