Why Keaton Hides the Santa Monica Pier in The Cameraman

Buster Keaton filmed an elaborate soaked-in-the-rain automobile tracking shot during The Cameraman on the Santa Monica Pier. Yet nothing during the sequence betrays it was filmed on a pier. Why film at such extraordinary site but hide it from the audience? My only thought – somehow easy access to oc...

Harold Lloyd Doug MacLean and Ben Model

Thanks to Ben Model’s new DVD release The Douglas MacLean Collection we see Harold Lloyd and Doug MacLean crossed paths many times. Both filmed high-rise stunts at the Hill St Tunnel, and home-town train scenes at the tiny Hynes depot, a one-time SoCal dairy capital, and beside the Palms Garage buil...

New Keystone Kops book

Hey everyone – my friend Lon Davis’s new anthology book CHASE! A Tribute to the Keystone Cops is now available for sale. It features articles by many authors and historians – see table below. It’s the first book devoted specifically to the Kops, and the proceeds will be allocated to silent film pres...

Pickford on the Brunton lot - with Keaton and the Talmadges

Mary Pickford staged The Hoodlum (1919) on a Brunton Studio backlot set later appearing in several Keaton films, Lloyd Williams filmed there too. There are even ties to the Talmadge sisters. https://silentlocations.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/0000-mary-pickford-buster-keaton-1024.jpg There's much to...

Re: Keaton's Missing The Cameraman Scene and Other Tricks

It makes sense to cut "the Admiral is coming" scene altogether if the surviving prints don't contain the payoff joke. But, as mentioned, this may have been the hotel's debut screen appearance, so a bit of LA history is lost along with the missing footage.

Keaton's Missing The Cameraman Scene and Other Tricks

A missing scene from Buster Keaton’s The Cameraman contains likely the first screen appearance of the newly opened Beverly Wilshire Hotel. https://silentlocations.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/blog-link_page_2.jpg and Buster’s newsreel fiasco in The Cameraman fully explained https://silentlocations.fi...

Silent Comedy's Crazy Corner

Quick – what are some essential elements for a silent comedy? A park bench? An angry cop? A banana peel? If you think about it, one absolutely essential geographic element is the humble street corner. https://silentlocations.files.wordpress.com/2020/01/crazy-corner.jpg The crazy corner of Alameda at...

Happy Roaring Twenties New Year at Keaton's Bungalow

Happy New Year everyone! Buster Keaton made his 1929 New Year's Resolutions at the small bungalow he rented just outside of MGM before being forced to reside at “Keaton's Kennel” inside the studio lot. https://silentlocations.files.wordpress.com/2020/01/1929.jpg https://silentlocations.files.wordpre...

Keaton at the Selig Studio "Prison"

Chaplin’s Tillie’s Punctured Romance solved a Keaton location years later, filming a "prison" scene at the Selig Studio for Convict 13 . https://silentlocations.files.wordpress.com/2019/12/3-view-2.jpg While details must wait for a later post, Buster also filmed the many Convict 13 golf sc...
