Re: THE GOOFY AGE (1924) Glenn Tryon

Quick question - I was watching a few 9.5mm films online (links from this site) - did 9.5mm film have one sprocket hole in the middle?

I didn't see a resemblance at all - he looked more like George Voscovec than Monte Blue, and I knew it wasn't him, either!

Re: WEISS-O-RAMA on sale through Amazon from Sprocket Vault

My advice is, don't hesitate to grab this set. The Turpin comedies are the highlight (if my son is any judge, and he is). I was glad to catch the Pollard-Loback entries and the Hairbreadth Harry romps; they best represent the absurdity to which silent comedy could aspire. An added bonus is the overa...

Re: Richard Schickel

"Five most divisive" perhaps, but he's waaayyyyyy down the list for me in terms of any real importance. There are even some Citadel Press "The Films of..." authors that I'd rank above Schickel. Hats off to him for THE MEN WHO MADE THE MOVIES, to give credit where credit is due (d...

Anxiously awaiting the turning of the worm, i.e. a biography of Richard Shickel's life and work by a film fan/historian who ultimately doesn't like him.

Re: THE ART OF SELLING MOVIES BY John McElwee now on Amazon

Ooh! Thanks for the tip! I got SHOWMEN, SELL IT HOT for Christmas a few years ago. I was so impressed, I let John McElwee know that I'd wished I'd had more time when I started reading it, because I would have finished it in one sitting. I'm looking forward to getting THE ART OF SELLING MOVIES - it's...

Re: Nitrateville Nitwittery: WHEN COMEDY WAS KING

Well, on a positive note, I got my copy of the restored WHEN COMEDY WAS KING this weekend. And I'm happy to say it lived up to my expectations. Wonderful job, and it's not hyperbole to say the film has never looked better on a home release. Then again, I never owned the two-reel cut-down Americom 8m...

Re: Nitrateville Nitwittery: WHEN COMEDY WAS KING

The caterwauling about any perceived faults in what undoubtedly a first-rate transfer would be funny if they weren't so irritating. For heaven's sake, when I first discovered the Youngson films, I had to wait until MILLION DOLLAR MOVIE showed them at 11:30pm. My take on remastering is this - does it...

Re: THE MACK SENNETT COLLECTION Volume Two

Oh this is wonderful news! My son and I watch Vol. One regularly. You've got a truckful of Roscoe Arbuckle, Billy Bevan, Andy Clyde, and Ben Turpin - four of my son's favorites. He'll be very happy (and so will his dad)!

Re: Nitrateville Answer Dept: Herb Graff Silent Comedy Film Festival

I remember these shows well! They were always a highlight of the Christmas and Easter seasons on WNET (Channel 13) in NY. This was back when there was educational programming for schools during the day, so school vacation time was always when this alternate programming was scheduled. When I recall t...
