It is a wonderful comedy, with a heartfelt tribute to Chaplin, that is laden with gobs of racial humor. I would expect to see Topsy and Eva released on home video before this one.

MICKEY'S SURPRISE (1929) Mickey McGuire
Here is the second talkie in the series. Apparently, like MICKEY'S MIDNIGHT FOLLIES, talent shows were popular settings because you could stage the whole thing on one set. And if your kid actors couldn't sing - instant comedy! https://youtu.be/RVhL2kpvZvE?si=HjcP749O4EMHOLv-

Re: The Old Shoe
This is great. But I can imagine Lorne Michaels saying, “A spoof of Unknown Chaplin? For the 10,000 viewers who watched it on PBS?”

THE FULLER GUSH MAN (1934)
The most interesting thing about this Walter Catlett two-reeler are the credits, in which writer-director Al Boasberg makes an on-camera appearance, along with the rest of the crew. https://youtu.be/SciXkqRFKeM

Re: Nitrateville Comment Dept: Laurel and Hardy Year One
When the next Sennett set comes out, wouldn’t it be fun to label it Vol. 3? Imagine the lifelong quest it will unleash among those searching for the elusive Vol. 2.

Re: Nitrateville Comment Dept: Laurel and Hardy Year One
Doubtless one of those "fans" who don't really like watching this stuff, but just like to see "Vol. 1" next to "Vol. 2" next to Vol. 3" on their bookshelves. The kind of people who sent you complaints that the 1929 Chases should have been "Vol. 1", not Vo...

Re: Bowler hat/derby in slapstick comedies
I'm not sure you will ever find a definitive first use of a bowler hat for comedic purposes since they were doubtless handy props in vaudeville. In Laurel & Hardy's 1927 Do Detectives Think?, their hats are meant to connote that they were tough gumshoes. But I think when you go back to the first...
